Yes ,Gibanica and I am not swearing by any means . I am though in love with Gibanica...not a hunky guy either !!!!
Those of you who know what I am talking about should just smile at this point.
Recently visited Slovenia and that is where I fell in love with Gibanica.
So bad was the the lust after Gibanica that I had to go back twice to a restaurant in Ljubiljana to yes, EAT IT!!!!
Gibanica is divine with its combination of cake and pastry.
I believe it comes from the Premurska region of Slovenia.
Whilst I never ventured to Premurska region knowingly , I definitely tasted the Gibanica. It is soooooo delectable ......
I read that it was used as one of the fifty national "birthday cakes" of the European Union 50th birthday celebrations in 2007.It also appears on stamp, believe it or not.
I was not invited of course to the celebrations but nevertheless have now discovered why .....Gibanica was also one of the celebration cake.
What makes it sooooo special well, it is the fact that it has all these flavours that meld at each level of the cake and your taste buds just go wow with each level. I really do not enjoy cakes as such but this is not what one would say too sweet and maybe that is why the taste buds went GAA GAA over it.
I think though it is more than that it is the blends of flavours that make you want more. I actually had to stop myself from downing a few , not just one slice.
So what is in Gibanica, no secret really as you can find the recipe on the internet.
Okay it is a layer of pastry filou like but a little more doughy, then a layer of cottage cheese, then poppy seed, then walnut and then grated apples. It is repeated with the pastry in between.
Then it is baked in an oven.
The sad thing is I have never had it in Oz and now I am on a quest to find it .
Or I just have to start baking it, very soon as my mouth just waters at the thought of Gibanica....A tragic GIBANICA LOVER!!!!
Obviously this is a rough explanation of Gibanica
