Job Hunting..the older Applicant
September 29th 2011 21:58
Not an easy thing job hunting , especially if you are diversely qualified in a number of areas and are older than the the 30 something.....You are not cute nor gorgeous any more, nor are you a metro man or a sexy hunk!!!
Much easier for the younger person to get a job , by younger I mean under the 40.By the age of 40 you become geriatric in the eyes of the Recruiters .
I have heard it from many socalled "older job seekers "that they are disadvantaged before they start even start to apply .
A number of reasons as they see it, usually, the recruiter is 20 something and has no idea what the older applicant can deliver , they only look at the physical age and go through the routine of interview but that is where it ends many tell me. No empathy ...it does not register in the vacant eyes of the Recruiter and the lack of their own experience shows in their routine questioning . The questions they churn out as told to by superiors, the FORMAT to follow.
Many older applicants don't put age on the applications either .
Whilst there is a discrimination act in place in Australia for age and sex and race , there is an undertone of clear discrimination and I have heard this complaint from many applicants for jobs over and over.
So how to get over this hurdle is hard and it is getting more and more difficult as time goes by due to the financial state of the economy as well as the person becoming despondent , feels defeated and life gets tuogher without a pay packet.
Some have gone to some well meaning but sometimes ,money grabbing employment consultants who say ,pay x amount and they will show you how to reformat the cv to make it more appealing to recruiters so they can get the jobs they may be applying for.
Wrong , waste of time and money they tell me, many older applicants even after the redoing of their cv for a princely sum ,search for months , years on end and barely survive financially or emotionally.
Many are willing to take lesser positions at lesser pay and still they find it tough.
Also they tell me they never get feedback as in todays world the Recruiters do not even give them the courtesy of replying to an application , politeness has also been thrown out the window so to say ,with the gargbage . It is a never ending ,go around the circle situation.
The answer in tough financial times is difficult but all I can say is keep trying , try and be positive and eventually someone may give you the break and once in the position , one can prove themselves .
The important thing is not to give up !!!
