There has been a lot of commentary regarding why Australia is not keeping up with the rest of the world in Gold rewards at the Olympics .....In my previous blog I mentioned the sports and general media commentators who have no idea about Sport.
I have always maintained that Sport needs to be fostered in the schools , and have made this comment for the past 20years.
Finally John Coates has made the comment publicly.
In our public schools whilst growing up there was always compulsory sport for all students. This is not the case any more , therefore how can we nurture future athletes if we do not know their capabilities early in life.
Having been a teacher , many children do not even realise they have the talents they do have and often a teacher at an early age can spot this.
Yes, we do have sporting highschools but we should not be so elitist , we need sport in all schools and not just at high school levels but at primary.
Sport helps learning and also builds character as well as team work. So the earlier everyone is involved in sport the better.
Private schools have compulsory sport and compete weekly against other schools , yes it is a lot of dedication from teachers but all worthwhile in also building rapport with the students.
So to build young athletes we need compulsory sport from primary up and all teachers involved , yes it will take money and infrastructure.
Next for our older athletes we need to keep our coaches who are so talented that countries globally employ them. We need to be able to keep them here in Oz and that too takes money and incentives.
We also need to develop great sporting facilities that all can use so everyone in all areas has a chance to either use at their leisure or be competiitve in events in clubs.
Organistaion is the key , funding and incentives to get sport in Oz for all in schools. Not just the Rugby or the AFL but real healthy sport that all can do.
It is up to politicians, educators , clubs to work together to make it all happen.
Then the future of Sport will be much stronger all round .
